“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” – Mark Twain
The saying above best describes the number one contender for the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship, Marcus Lewis (4-2). Lewis earned his title shot by defeating the former Champion “Mr. Athletic” Jeff Cobb (4-2-1) on November 22nd in Gilroy, CA last year. It was an epic battle of speed and power and Marcus Lewis was able to take advantage of a mistake made by the former champ and connect with his 450 Splash off the top turnbuckle for the pin.
On Friday, March 20th at Del Mar High School in San Jose, CA, Marcus Lewis has his first shot at the PREMIER title against a monster of a man in reigning Heavyweight Champion “The God of War” JR Kratos (5-2). This match will once again be a battle of speed versus power. Marcus Lewis is once again ready to pull off another upset.
“Seems like my whole wrestling career, I have gone up against the odds,” said Lewis. “Many thought I was just a stepping stone for Jeff Cobb to get another shot at the gold, but I proved everyone wrong back in November.”
Not only is Marcus Lewis going into this match as an underdog, he is also wrestling in the biggest match of his career in his hometown of San Jose. Most athletes get overwhelmed competing in their hometown, but Marcus is ready for that pressure.
“I have dreamt since being a little kid of winning a major championship in my hometown in front of all my friends and family watching,” said an excited Lewis. “I do not see wrestling for the title in my hometown as pressure, but as destiny.”
Though Marcus is on a four-match win streak with PREMIER, he feels being in the underdog role is to his advantage.
“You know, I don’t mind being the underdog, I have been the underdog my entire career. The pressure is all on JR Kratos to defeat me. That gives me an advantage with nothing to lose. That lack of pressure will keep me focused to go all out and win the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship on March 20th.”
When it comes to the power of JR Kratos, how does Marcus plan on countering the strength of the champion?
“Kratos knows my strategy, heck everyone in the building will know my strategy and that is to stick and move. I am going to be elusive in that ring, making that big man chase me around and get that tongue hanging out of his mouth. Once that happens, I will strike and I will get him in position to hit the move that has brought me all my victories in PREMIER, the 450 Splash, and win the championship.”
