Jeff Cobb: On the Road Back to the Title

JC over JR

When an athlete loses their championship, the mark of a true champion is to make the climb back to the top of the mountain. “Mr. Athletic” Jeff Cobb (4-1-1) held the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship for well over a year – June 9th, 2013 to August 10th, 2014 – defending the title on three occasions in thrilling matches. On a hot August night in Gilroy CA, Jeff Cobb ran into a juggernaut named JR Kratos and lost the championship. At PREMIER VII: Kratos vs Dutra on Saturday, November 22nd in Gilroy, CA, “Mr. Athletic” finds himself in unfamiliar territory, as a contender.

“Mr. Athletic” meets one of the most exciting young PREMIER Athletes, Marcus Lewis (3-2). Both men are scheduled to compete in the sixth match of the night to determine the next contender for the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship. Marcus Lewis is looking to secure his first ever shot at the title while Jeff Cobb is looking for another chance to regain a title that he feels is his.”Losing the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship was very tough for me” said Jeff Cobb. “That match with JR Kratos was really close and I nearly had him pinned, but JR Kratos was the better man that night.”

Jeff Cobb did what he always does after a tough loss. He remained focused and went back to work into improving his game to regain the gold.

“The next morning, I woke up and went to the gym. A lot of guys when they lose a championship, they take time off and give themselves a mental break from the grind of being a champion.   Not me, I embrace the grind.  I went right back to my gym with all the pain from that physical match with Kratos from the night before. All I kept visualizing was regaining my PREMIER Heavyweight Championship.”

When facing his next opponent Marcus Lewis, Cobb knows he is going to be in a different type of match then he has ever had in PREMIER.

“Marcus relies on his speed and agility, that is his game. But he won’t be able to run for long,” said Cobb. “Normally, a lot of guys would cut weight to keep up with a faster opponent, but I am doing the opposite. I am bulking up, getting bigger because once I catch him, Marcus is going for a ride. People keep talking about his speed and his high-flying ability but they forget about the gas tank that I have. If Marcus thinks he can tire me out, he is going to find quick that his game plan is not going to work against me.”

Jeff Cobb versus Marcus Lewis is that old school match up of power versus speed. But this match is much more then just a clash of styles. It’s for the right to become next in line for a shot at the PREMIER Heavyweight Championship!
